The Institute of Power Engineering is a state owned research Institute. The Institute of Power Engineering, Gdańsk Division, was established in 1954 and, from the very beginning has been closely connected with Electricity Supply Industry (ESI).Gdansk Division has implemented and maintains the Quality Management System, which fulfils the requirements of the standard ISO 9001-2001.Gdansk Division is application oriented with projects performed mainly in-house. However co-operation with industrial partners has been intensified during last years. Gdansk Division of The Institute of Power Engineering is active both in research and technical services. Technical services are performed by the same staff providing R&D. It help us important feedback. Generally we carry out the whole process from the study phase through development, design, manufacturing and installation supervision up to commissioning. This approach is applied to all our products and equipment provided.
Our major customers are from Electricity Supply Industry in Poland. However our products and services have also been provided to industrial power plants (automation systems) and shipyard industry (excitation systems, shaft generator control).
At international level our products and/or services have been provided to: USA, SPAIN, India, Pakistan, Turkey, Greece, Czech Republic, Slovak Republic, Former Soviet Union Countries.
We have been co-operating with : ABB, Alstom, Westinghouse, Siemens to provide various products and services to both polish and foreign customers.
From November 1, 2020, IEn Gdańsk is launching the eNeuron project, which is the fifth project financed by the Horizon 2020 program. We are currently implementing the INTERPLAN, Sharing Cities and EUniversal projects, and the UPGRID project has been completed. These projects were also co-financed by the Ministry of Science and Higher Education under the Premia na Horyzoncie program.
It has been almost a year since for the first time at IEn testing of algorithms for devices under development was carried out with use of a real time digital simulator (RTDS). The device under test was the controller for synchronous start-up of a large hydro unit and the test setup included RTDS simulating the operation of the start-up converters, the hydro unit itself and the power plant with the grid. It was down to RTDS utilisation that consistent tests were possible in a wide range of simulated operational conditions – from normal operation to disturbed and alert states – which allowed for verification and optimisation of its operation in any conceivable circumstances. Since then, hardware-in-the-loop is always used by the project teams of IEn in the V&V (validation and verification) process of synchronous frequency converters (SFC) and automatic voltage regulators (AVR). What is more, RTDS is also used for other purposes, such as development of new algorithms, e.g. synthetic inertia algorithm devised in H2020 project “INTERPLAN”, or for simulation of operation of HVDC.
RTDS owned by IEn was delivered by a leader in real time simulation for power industry, the RTDS Technologies from Canada. The simulator is based on the latest Novacor solution and is equipped with analogue and digital I/Os, communication protocols such as IEC 61850 and IEEE C37.118, which allow for protection testing, PMU/WAMS testing and etc.
