Static Frequency Converters (SFC)

The Institute of Power Engineering, Gdańsk Division offers innovative, sensor-free Static Frequency Converters (SFC). SFC systems are thyristor power electronic converters which are used for example in pumped-storage power plants (for start-up of engines or reversible machines for pump operation) and in gas turbines (for cold and hot start-up of gas turbines).

During operation, the SFC system draws power with constant voltage and frequency values from an external power source and converts it into energy with variable voltage and frequency values to supply the stator of a synchronous machine. As a result, the synchronous generator gradually increases its rotational speed until it reaches synchronous rotation.

The start-up with the SFC system is a synchronous start-up and unlike an asynchronous start-up it proceeds without reducing the voltage on the switchgear busbars and without overloading the current circuits. As a result, the use of the SFC system ensures a significantly longer service life of the synchronous machine.
