Evaluation of the stability of electric power system(s) operation

The Institute of Power Engineering, Gdańsk Division performs analytical works related to testing and evaluation of the stability of electric power systems operation. Such analyses concern the selected areas of the system (e.g. individual DSOs or entire countries) as well as the entire synchronously connected areas (e.g. the area of continental Europe – ENTSO-E CE). The scope of studied phenomena related to stability includes the following:

  • Transient stability – dynamic simulations in the time domain in the range of time constants from single milliseconds. The ability of interconnected synchronous generators to remain in synchronism is tested. The issue of angular stability is related to studies of electromechanical oscillation. For example, values such as critical clearing times (CCT) are determined that allow to specify the stability margin.
  • Low signal stability – mainly dynamic simulations in the frequency domain using a linearised model of the tested power system. This type of analyses involves the determination of local and global modes (oscillation) along with their frequency and damping ratio and the degree of involvement of individual units (or entire areas).
  • Frequency stability – dynamic simulations in the time domain in the range of time constants from individual milliseconds, taking into account the phenomena and automation systems affecting the ability of the system to maintain the frequency within the specified range of permissible variation.
  • Voltage stability – static and dynamic simulations in the time domain as well as using modal analysis methods to check whether there is a possibility of fulfilling the demand for reactive power in the system.

In our studies, we use electrical power system models consisting of both the static part (network structure, demand, etc.) and the dynamic part (synchronous generators, regulation systems, etc.). These models map the behaviour of conventional (synchronous) units, but also of modern devices that are more and more commonly used in the tested systems, i.e. BESS, wind generation, photovoltaic generation, electronic power systems (HVDC, STATCOM, etc.). As part of the work performed, we also carry out measurement validation of models.

The main recipients of our work related to evaluation of the power systems' stability include transmission system operators (PSE, Elering, Litgrid, Ukrenergo and others) and ENTSO-E.
