The RTDS Research Laboratory at the Institute of Power Engineering, Gdańsk Division is equipped with a modern, the only one of this class in Poland, Real Time Digital Simulator (RTDS) that allows for simulation of a complex power system for fast, accurate and cost-effective testing of the integrated power systems using the Hardware-In-the-Loop (HIL) technology. The laboratory's research capabilities include, among other things:

• security systems
• station automation
• WAMS and PMU
• regulation systems
• microgrids
• Smart Grid and RES systems.

The Real Time Digital Simulator is a solution delivered by RTDS Technologies from Canada, a leading company in real-time simulations. The device is based on a multi-core Novacor system and is equipped with a wide range of peripherals.

The use of the RTDS allows, among other things, for the following:

• validation of the protection devices' operation in conditions similar to real ones
• testing in the closed system of devices using the IEC 61850 protocol
• simulations of the PMU systems' operation and testing of PDC hubs
• testing and parametrisation of regulation systems in a simulated network environment
• testing of controllers and protection devices for microgrids and Local Balancing Zones
• expanding competences for operators of distribution, transmission and generation systems
