The IEC61850 standard

The Institute of Power Engineering has been engaged in the issues related to the IEC 61850 standard since the standard's beginning. When the standard described in IEC 61850 was not widely known yet, we organised numerous trainings to make engineers dealing with the automation of power stations familiarised with the IEC 61850 standard. Currently, the compliance of power automation equipment with the IEC 61850 standard becomes an applicable requirement. Device manufacturers should equip their products with communication capabilities that conform to the IEC 61850 standard and obtain a certificate of conformity of the device operation to this standard.

 

The main field of activity of the Institute of Power Engineering as regards the IEC 61850 standard is assistance in the adaptation / expansion of digital automation devices to operate in stations where communication solutions as per the IEC 61850 standard have been introduced. Our support includes assistance in choosing the correct communication software and the hardware on which this software will run.

 

In addition, we test station automation devices in terms of conformity to the standard. The scope of conformity tests is tailored to individual tested devices. It is determined on the basis of its characteristics specified in the documents provided by the device manufacturer. The Institute conducts conformity tests that consist in examining the reaction to permitted and prohibited excitations. These tests include:

  • inspection of documentation,
  • tests of configuration files,
  • tests of implementation of the communication protocol stack,
  • tests of communication functions used,
  • tests of device-specific extensions.

 

After successful completion of the tests, a certificate of conformity of the device to the IEC 61850 standard is issued.
